About

What Is a Telescopic Cylinder?

Telescopic hydraulic cylinders also referred to as multi-stage cylinders, are linear actuators that have a series of tubular rods referred to as sleeves. There are usually four or five sleeves that sequentially decrease in diameter and are nested in one another. As soon as pressure reaches the cylinder, the largest sleeve (main barrel) extends. When it’s reached its maximum strokes, the next sleeve extends. Once the cylinder reaches the final stage (the plunger), it stops. While both single-acting cylinders and double-acting cylinders exist, single-acting are the most common.

Although multi-stage cylinders pneumatic  cylinders exist, it’s more common to see hydraulic telescopic cylinders in use. Common applications for telescopic cylinders with the power to handle heavy loads include dump trucks, cranes and garbage trucks.

What Type of Telescopic Cylinder Do You Have?

Regardless of the type of telescopic hydraulic cylinder that you have, rest assured that our team at Cylinders, Inc. can help make repairs as necessary. We also work with custom telescopic hydraulic cylinders.

What Type of Position Sensor Does Your Cylinder Have?

Do you have an electronic, smart sensor cylinder?

Generally, if your cylinder has an electronic plug or port connection, position sensing is in the cylinder. Different OEM and equipment manufactures have proprietary systems, however common systems include:

Single-Acting Telescopic Cylinders

Single-Acting Telescopic Cylinders

As the name suggests, single-acting telescopic cylinders extend in one direction with hydraulic pressure applied. The weight of the load combined with gravity forces the cylinder to collapse, utilizing a a simple, efficient design.

Double-Acting Telescopic Cylinders

Double-Acting Telescopic Cylinders

There are also double-acting telescopic cylinders that retract and extend in both directions with hydraulic pressure applied. This cylinder variety is known to be complex in design but is very efficient when used in the right application. We’re happy to help with double-acting telescopic hydraulic cylinder repair as well.

Single/Double-Acting Combination Cylinders

Single/Double-Acting Combination Cylinders

You can also choose a telescopic cylinder that allows for both a single and double-acting combination. For example, this is often needed in drill rig operations. This design provides the benefits of a double-acting cylinder as well as the cost-effectiveness of a single-acting cylinder.

How We Repair Telescopic Cylinders

Inspection

Inspection

As soon as we receive your cylinder, our experienced technicians will carefully inspect it to see what the repair entails. Some fixes are straightforward such as resealing the cylinder. In some cases, we will need to get in touch with our clients to tell them additional details about what caused the failure in the first place and what our team will do to fix it. We pride ourselves on being transparent and communicative with our clients.

Repair

Repair

The repair process for each telescopic cylinder is different and it can be complicated depending on how many different parts require repairing or replacing. For example, for resealing a telescopic cylinder, we’ll remove the packing gland nut, seals, stages, port plug, bearing, wave spring, and other necessary components. We’ll then dispose of the old parts and specify the resealing  kit. Each part is then cleaned, inspected and polished to determine that it can remain in service. From there, we will assemble the cylinder including the plunger, threaded stop ring, bearing, wave spring, etc. until it’s reassembled.

Testing

Testing

After the repair is completed, the cylinder will be pressure-tested to make sure that everything works as it should.
